Caremates

We developed the Caremates platform to enable a two-way straight connection between caregivers and elderly people. The client came to us because of our proven track record with data management. In an effort to achieve the best possible result, we’ve embarked on a two-year research and development journey.

It leads us to learn that the socio-economic landscape of the end-user country is specific, and requires more than just secure access to qualified care professionals. What it needed was a streamlined platform to connect certified caregivers as well as teachers and tutors, without the loss of safety for the end-user. In the end, Caremates became the ultimate tool to look for all types of companions or help for an elderly relative, from a visiting housekeeper to a come-in yoga instructor. Nevertheless, every caregiver goes through a specific vetting process, to guarantee safety to the end-user.

The challenge

Japan is the destination, a culture cradle, and a country of extreme discipline. But also, it is a country where people aged 70 or over represent 22.2 % of the total population. The population aged 90 and over had reached two million back in 2017. Japan also has a record number of centenarians: over 80 000. This figure is expected to rise to 440 000 by 2050. Thus, we needed to understand the immediate needs of this niche audience.

The clients’ expectations were that elder people would require help within the healthcare industry – nurses, visiting companions. Officials in Japan have warned that dementia and the fraying of traditional community ties are contributing to loneliness and isolation. The Mainichi Shimbun newspaper reported that 538 people died “lonely deaths” while living with others in Tokyo and Osaka between 2017 and last year. That’s why the scope of the project changed slightly.

The primary purpose of the platform – to connect elderly people with a certified caregiver – stayed the same. But the specification of the caregivers’ expertise and skill turned up to be much more vast and exciting. We develop an online platform that became a multifaceted tool, that provides users with a convenient and affordable personal companion. Companions can take care of the clients, but also they can teach the elderly new skills, and foreign languages, accompany them to visit exciting places.

The solution

Technically, the platform is split into two components. The first part is for the caregiver, where the user creates a profile, lists the description of expertise (from running errands to being a Ph.D. in English literature), and an hourly rate. Later, the users can evaluate the provider, so users can choose the most high-ranking one. The second part is the client area, where clients can book caregivers.

Technically, Caremates consists of the 5 main parts:

  1. Desktop and mobile client (frontend)
  2. Admin panel
  3. Backend
  4. Cloud infrastructure
  5. Numerous third-party services

The web client was built with Angular.Js and the mobile app was created with Swift. The team used MSSQL as a database. Cloud infrastructure was built in AWS. We also used third-party services to create numerous unique features and provide a unique care experience.

Also, the team integrated:

  • Trustdock for user verification based on verified information
  • Twillio for organizing online rooms and communication between users
  • Pubnub – as a chat solution
  • Agora – for organizing video chats and video streaming
  • Google Translates for easy multilanguage communication

Finally, we created a solution that improves the quality of care for senior citizens and patients. In terms of safety, the platform has several ways to verify the care provider, before connecting them to the user. We’ve built a Custom Stripe verification system and a proven Japanese platform, TrustDoc. Besides, the platform has an option of having a chat, and video chat with a caregiver before hiring.

Benefits

  • Comfort: The primary benefit of home care is that your loved one can stay in the most comfortable and familiar place. Being in familiar surroundings can be especially beneficial for those suffering from progressive conditions that affect memory, such as dementia.
  • Personalized Care: Instead of adjusting to the schedules and routines of a care facility, a Caremates is customized to fit your family’s needs. Whether your loved one only needs assistance for a few hours a day or requires full-time live-in care, You can find a caregiver, who is flexible and adapts to what is best for each client.
  • One-on-one Attention: The personal nature of Caremates allows your loved one to be the caregiver’s primary focus. Their job is to provide a level of attention and care that ensures your loved one is safe and comfortable.
  • Peace of mind: You won’t have to worry about your loved one being alone and falling or getting injured while performing daily activities such as showering and using the stove. Instead, you will be able to rest easy knowing they are well cared for.
  • Independence: Loss of independence is a big concern for seniors considering care options. A huge advantage of Caremates is that your loved ones can keep control over any aspect of their daily life. They get to continue living by their own schedule, choosing when they want to eat, sleep, and socialize. For seniors who no longer drive, a caregiver
