Aptar, a leader in the pharmaceutical field, approached us with a vision to improve medication management for allergy sufferers by integrating a smart device system. This project sought to close the gap between patients and medical professionals, offering a holistic solution that encompasses a patient-facing mobile app, a web application for medical staff, and the development of specialized firmware for an existing smart device aimed at transforming the dispensing of allergy medications.

Challenge

The iPump project for Aptar introduced a set of intricate challenges, primarily focused on integrating a provided smart medication dispensing device with a new digital infrastructure. Our task was to develop specialized firmware for this pre-existing device, which demanded precise calibration to accurately measure medication doses dispensed by patients. This required addressing several technical hurdles such as ensuring the device’s activation under varying pressures, compensating for temperature fluctuations that affect the sensor readings, and accurately detecting partial pump presses. Additionally, the project scope included developing a mobile application for patients and a web application for doctors, both of which needed to ensure secure, reliable data exchange and real-time synchronization with the smart device. Creating these applications posed challenges in user interface design, data security, and the management of real-time data flow between patients, medical staff, and the smart device.

Solution

In response to these challenges, our solution encompassed a comprehensive approach to firmware development and digital application creation. For the smart medication dispensing device provided by Aptar, we focused on firmware optimization to enable accurate medication dose measurement and efficient energy use, ensuring the device remained operational on a non-replaceable battery for a prolonged period. We implemented advanced algorithms for temperature compensation and partial pump press detection to maintain the device’s reliability under various conditions.

To complement the smart device, we developed a mobile application for patients and a web application for doctors, emphasizing intuitive user interfaces and secure data handling. Our team established robust Bluetooth communication protocols to facilitate secure and seamless data transmission between the smart device and the applications, enabling real-time updates on medication dispensation and adherence. This connectivity allowed doctors to monitor patient progress and adjust treatment plans via the web application effectively.

Utilizing AWS services, we constructed a flexible, modular backend architecture that integrated the data streams from the smart device, patient mobile app, and doctor web application. This backend setup ensured that all components of the iPump system worked in harmony, providing a cohesive and efficient healthcare management solution.

Benefits

As a result of our collaboration, we provided Aptar with a comprehensive healthcare solution that significantly improved medication management and patient care. By integrating a smart device with tailored mobile and web applications, we enabled improved medication adherence among patients, ensuring they follow their schedules more accurately and effectively. This system also offered medical staff real-time monitoring capabilities through a web application, allowing for timely adjustments to treatment plans and optimizing patient care. A key achievement of the project was the development of specialized firmware for the smart device, addressing technical challenges related to dose measurement accuracy and energy efficiency. This innovation ensures the device’s reliability and functionality over an extended period, without the need for frequent battery replacements.
